LATEST NEWS

HAPPY RETURNS TO THE PARK AND WESTAR

Kourtney Shayanpour and Smart Alec

In good weather, Elmcroft riders did well at consecutive weekend shows in mid-July. Alice Salway on Bobby Brown and Robert Paterson on Van Quick made debuts in jumpers at the Nepean National Equestrian Park, while Gabrielle Morrison on Jimini Criquet rode well in her first ever jumper outing at Westar, with no rails down in three classes. Samantha MacGillivrey helped out as a catch rider at both shows prepping horses.

Andrea McCullagh and Homeward Bound

Andrea McCullagh was rock-steady on Homeward Bound reaping high ribbons in the Hopeful Jumpers with Cydney Laughton- Egan putting in cultured performances on Black Tie Affair. Lindsay Iob again took home a fistful of ribbons for her efforts at the Park with On The Fly, while Brooke Murray was Reserve Champion both weekends riding the beguiling Marco Polo in Short Stirrups

Cydney Laughton-Egan on Black Tie Affair

Kourtney Shayanpour stunned all her supporters with back-to-back Championships at the Park and then Westar in her first ever starts in the 30+ strong fields for the Child/Adult Jumpers--of course she was aboard the formidable Smart Alec! On her own Buenos Aires, Kourtney also picked up other ribbons in these classes as well as in 'B' equitation. Mike Sallis made the big break-through on Pinot Grigio, culminating in clear rounds and then a 6th place in the C/A Speed class at Westar. Finally, Amanda took youngsters Bravado and Impervious for outings in two Trillium Jumper classes in the good footing and challenging layout of the GP ring at the Park. She won the last class of the day on Impervious as a warm up for his debut at Bromont International next week.

SUNNY ASHLAND CHAMPS

Riding On The Fly, Lindsay Iob brought home the Reserve Champion ribbon in Pre-Novice Hunters as well as winning the Novice Equitation over Fences, plus other good colours. Her results were matched by Brooke Murray on Marco Polo as Reserve Champion in Short Stirrups, together with good equitation ribbons. Pascal Lepine figured prominently in both Novice Equitation classes with high ribbons aboard JustaHabit.

It was also a great weekend for Elmcroft jumpers, with Kourtney Shayanpour making her debut on Smart Alec with a Championship in the Hopefuls--with over 30 competitors-- plus high ribbons in the same classes on her Buenos Aires. Cydney Laughton-Egan, Alice Salway and Mike Sallis also did well in these same classes. Then Kourtney changed rings and took high ribbons in B Equitation.

On Sunday, Samantha MacGillivray gave Impervious an outing in the Child/Adult Jumpers with spectacular results; with a last jump to win she just missed out in one class--among 28 competitors---but took strong 3rd and 4th places in the other two classes. Look for our other riders back from holidays next week and new horses from Elmcroft coming on to the circuit.

RAIN DELAYED WESTAR SHOW

One week after originally scheduled, Westar got a weather break and held its first round of summer shows. Taking over the ride on Smart Alec, Sam MacGillivray claimed the Reserve Champion ribbon in Child/Adult Jumpers as she romped to victory in the third class. Meanwhile Pascal Lepine was Champion of the Green Hunters with JustaHabit as well as collecting very respectable equitation ribbons. On Sunday Elmcroft returned with four Hopeful Jumpers, each of which won a significant ribbon. Kourtney Shayanpour won the Jumper Equitation on Buenos Aires and a third in 'B' eq., while Andrea McCullagh pulled 2nd and 3rd ribbons in the large jumper classes on her redoutable mount, Homeward Bound. Cydney Laughton-Egan also captured ribbons on Black Tie Affair with some classic rides, and Mike Sallis looked good on Pinot Grigio putting in clear rounds.

ELMCROFT FOAL

Anna--aka Happyfrolicinganna--Elmcroft's beautiful Nijinsky-line thorobred mare has produced a son to world-class jumper sire Beaulieu's Coolman who is to be called Cool Cherokee, barn name Clive.

Here they are at Elmcroft, about one hour after Clive was born.

SHOW SEASON STARTS

Elmcroft riders jumped to successes at the National Equestrian Park Trillium show opener, with Taylor Van den Akker and Smart Alec taking the Championship in the Child/Adult Jumpers, with Sam MacGillivray as Reserve Champion on Impervious; Catherine Fong on Jimini Criquet and Andrea McCullagh on Homeward Bound also took high ribbons in these classes. Meanwhile in the pony ring Brooke Murray and Brooke Vander Nakker pulled in ribbons and the next day Kourtney Shayanpour did likewise on her new Childrens Hunter, Buenos Aires.

Kourtney and Buenos Aires also picked up a big  a pile of ribbons at the Pepiniere/St Lazare horse shows at the end of May, along with Coach Amanda riding jumpers in the Prelim classes. A highlight of this show was the clear round in the Speed Derby posted by Amanda and Nero--who clearly loved every second of it!!

      CONGRATULATIONS

AMANDA AND NERO, 2008 Amanda Hay

WELCOME

New boarders include Andrea McCullagh, and Katie Cleary . We also welcome junior rider Lindsay Iob and adult amateur Celidhe Wynn. We look forward to seeing them  compete in Spring 2008, along with our established clients and new lesson participants.

HIGH JINKS AT PINKS PARTY

A gathering of more than fifty stalwarts braved the icy weather to attend the Second Annual  PINKS PARTY  at the Elmcroft farm house in Dunrobin on Sunday afternoon, 13, January, 2008. The assembled group raised close to $2000 for Canadian Breast Cancer Research and enjoyed every moment of doing it! Everyone made a donation to receive raffle tickets for horsey goodies kindly donated, and our riders got their tongue-in–cheek Certificates of Merit [?] for 2007-8, produced by Robert Paterson. This caused lots of excitement and loads of laughter as MC Amanda kept the patter going.

We want to thank all those who contributed and especially to our kind sponsors; Lynn and Julie from Bonnie Loch Acres; Greenhawk of Ottawa—particularly Katherine and Louise--; Jim Lewis Agri-Nutrition; Cotswold Saddlery and Elmcroft Equine Services. Many thanks also for the food and drinks brought by members and supporters of Team Elmcroft, and to Amanda, Melanie and John for graciously opening their home for this event.

Let’s do it again next year—and until cancer is beaten.

ROYAL REUNIONS

Amanda and Richard

Share Memories

Meeting at the Royal for the first time in several years, old friends Richard Spooner and Amanda caught up on each others current careers. Richard is now a US team rider based in Los Angeles and Europe and has been show-jumping recently in World Cup venues, such as Malaysia, Rome and Spruce Meadows. Amanda was Richard's first ever student--here in Ottawa--when she was a teenager. Richard coached her to a series of equitation medals. Today, Amanda carries on that tradition coaching riders in hunters, jumpers and equitation, together with competing herself in national show-jumping.

For more on "The Master of Faster" go to;      www.richardspooner.com

The Royal also gave Amanda a chance to say hello to Michelle--official photographer at the Royal--and Patrick Fields, a frequent contributor to Horse Sport magazine. Once upon a time, Patrick was the manager at Elmcroft and he and Michelle lived in the farm house. Today they enjoy riding in the Toronto area.

George Morris and Randy Roy Sessions

Our coaches, Amanda and Melanie attended George Morris' clinic/master class at Morven Park, Virginia on 9-10, October, 2007. Mr Morris remains the master of teaching, technique and horsemanship, providing an excellent professional development experience for our coaching team.

Our coaching team also attended the Randy Roy Judging Clinic in Ottawa on 20-21, October.
