JUMPERS AT PEPINIERE, 2007

Taking advantage of better weather in Pepiniere’s second week in St Lazare Quebec, Amanda put up some good results with her string of jumpers;

·        The Irish-bred Impervious was second in the Speed Class;

·        Belgian-bred Riff Raff brought home a fourth in the same class,

·        Hanoverian youngster Bravado showed his form with some spectacular scopey jumping in clear rounds, and

AMANDA AND NERO, 2008 Amanda Hay

WELCOME

New boarders include Andrea McCullagh, and Katie Cleary . We also welcome junior riders Catherine Fong from Vankleek Hill, Lindsay Iob, the twins Rachel and Maggie, and adult amateur Celidhe Wynn. We look forward to seeing them all compete in Spring 2008, along with our established clients and new lesson participants.

HIGH JINKS AT PINKS PARTY

A gathering of more than fifty stalwarts braved the icy weather to attend the Second Annual  PINKS PARTY  at the Elmcroft farm house in Dunrobin on Sunday afternoon, 13, January, 2008. The assembled group raised close to $2000 for Canadian Breast Cancer Research and enjoyed every moment of doing it! Everyone made a donation to receive raffle tickets for horsey goodies kindly donated, and our riders got their tongue-in–cheek Certificates of Merit [?] for 2007-8, produced by Robert Paterson. This caused lots of excitement and loads of laughter as MC Amanda kept the patter going.

We want to thank all those who contributed and especially to our kind sponsors; Lynn and Julie from Bonnie Loch Acres; Greenhawk of Ottawa—particularly Katherine and Louise--; Jim Lewis Agri-Nutrition; Cotswold Saddlery and Elmcroft Equine Services. Many thanks also for the food and drinks brought by members and supporters of Team Elmcroft, and to Amanda, Melanie and John for graciously opening their home for this event.

Let’s do it again next year—and until cancer is beaten.

ROYAL REUNIONS

Amanda and Richard

Share Memories

Meeting at the Royal for the first time in several years, old friends Richard Spooner and Amanda caught up on each others current careers. Richard is now a US team rider based in Los Angeles and Europe and has been show-jumping recently in World Cup venues, such as Malaysia, Rome and Spruce Meadows. Amanda was Richard's first ever student--here in Ottawa--when she was a teenager. Richard coached her to a series of equitation medals. Today, Amanda carries on that tradition coaching riders in hunters, jumpers and equitation, together with competing herself in national show-jumping.

For more on "The Master of Faster" go to;      www.richardspooner.com

The Royal also gave Amanda a chance to say hello to Michelle--official photographer at the Royal--and Patrick Fields, a frequent contributor to Horse Sport magazine. Once upon a time, Patrick was the manager at Elmcroft and he and Michelle lived in the farm house. Today they enjoy riding in the Toronto area.

NEW BOARDERS AND CLIENTS; FALL 2007

Elmcroft welcomes new boarders and congratulates those with new horses including: Freya with Cydney Laughton-Eagan; Elroy with Kourtney Shayanpour; Pinot Grigio with Mike Sallis; Justa Habit with Pascale Lepine; and Escada from Stanley Trapaz. Stalls in new barn are now available.

Among several new lesson clients, Amanda and Melanie welcome: Andrea, Brooke M, Brooke V, Catherine, Celidhe, Emma, Florence, Genvieve, Kendra, Lindsay, Marielle, Taylor and Tessa.

Located in Kanata, Elmcroft offers riding lessons in both English and French.

We are sad to bid goodbye to Katherine Hale and Seabird as he heads for pasture retirement.

Meanwhile, the Elmcroft team has acquired several new jumpers and hunters; if you are in the market for an excellent new horse, then contact Melanie @ melly_the_great@hotmail.com.

George Morris and Randy Roy Sessions

Our coaches, Amanda and Melanie attended George Morris' clinic/master class at Morven Park, Virginia on 9-10, October, 2007. Mr Morris remains the master of teaching, technique and horsemanship, providing an excellent professional development experience for our coaching team.

Our coaching team also attended the Randy Roy Judging Clinic in Ottawa on 20-21, October.

THREE RIBBONS FOR MIKE ON SMART ALEC AT THE TRILLIUM CHAMPIONSHIPS

A year ago Mike Sallis had nothing but grief in the Child/Adult Jumper ring; he rarely got past the third jump. But a switch of mounts at the third Trillium show of 2007 and a new coaching plan changed all that. Mike went from 'zero to hero' with Smart Alec in six shows, ending up third in the Eastern zone C/A jumpers. But the best was yet to come.

Mike's new partner is a 9-year old Thoroughbred gelding son of Breeders Cup winner Manila. But Alec didn't want to race, he wants to jump-and he is spectacularly good at it. After stints with Amanda on the Trillium circuit and then with Melanie on the Quebec 'A' Circuit--where he was Quebec Zone Reserve Champion, Level 3 Jumpers-Alec took Mike on board. Elmcroft's coaches had prepared horse and rider well for their new partnership. And the outcome is superb.

The 'galloping grandpa' and Alec won three major ribbons at the Palgrave Trillium Finals for the whole of Ontario. Mike and Alec were 8th in the Speed class, 2nd in the Table A, and 5th in the Mini Prix, each out of 40 starters, over three days of competition. These were the best results of any Eastern zone C/A jumper horse-rider combination. So, sincere congratulations to Michael Sallis and his mount Smart Alec on carrying the banner high for Elmcroft. And many thanks to Kate Peer for grooming Alec at the Finals, and to Amanda for an outstanding coaching job with this formidable pair of competitors. What will they do in 2008?

ASHLAND AGAIN

Three out of Four is very good; that's what Kourtney Shayanpour managed with her third win of the  Modified Child/Adult Equitation Medal on "Ricky" [ aka. BustAMove] at Ashland show on Labour Day weekend. Kourtney has been difficult to beat in these eq. classes since moving up to riding Ricky, the 16.2 hand chestnut Appendix gelding. She has also been picking up some good hunter ribbons on him.

Meanwhile, Pascal LePine and her mount JustAHabit also collected some good equitation ribbons and Cydney Laughton-Eagan was Reseve Champion in Pre-Novice Hunters on Natasha Gauthier's Leporello. It was a "smaller" jumper turn out than usual, with Sam McGillivray proving to the audience that Jimini Criquet-altho' a large pony-is quite at home in Child /Adult Jumpers, as is Cailin La Prairie on her mount; both riders brought home strong ribbons.

Congratulations to our riders, their families and supporters, and Amanda and Melanie-our coaches--for a very successful 2007 Trillium Circuit season!

IN FORM AT FIDDLERS

Kourtney Shayanpour won the overall M Child Adult Equitation first place Medal and picked up ribbons in hunter and C Equitation. Jason Neill was Hack division Champion with a two firsts and a second. Brooke Vandenakker claimed a first over fences and a second on the flat in Novice Equitation.  Natasha Gauthier also took home a nice hunter ribbon.

Brooke

In the jumper divisions, Mike Sallis strengthened his bid for zone award with a third and fourth place, while Samantha McGillivray returned to the ring with strong rides and a third place ribbon. As before, Taylor Vandenakker left the crowd gasping as she sizzled to victory in the last Hopeful Jumper class, which with earlier ribbons, once more ensured her of the division Championship.

Taylor

Great competitors and first-rate coaching; many congratulations to all involved.

CLIX FOR SHOW PIX

GAELIC SUCCESSES

Gaelic Glen show saw Elmcroft riders harvest a bushel of high ribbons. Coaches Mel and Amanda had a rewarding day as riders brought home great prizes:

  • Brooke Vandenakker on Out of the Blue picked up a handful of good pony hunter ribbons and ended her day with a win in Novice Equitation on the Flat;

  • Anna Lazurko garnered hunter ribbons with On The Fly and took the win in Novice Equitation over Fences;

  • Brooke Murray was out right Short Stirrups Champion on Paint by Numbers;

  • Cydney Laughton-Egan got strong prizes in hunter and equitation classes on Leporello;

  • Mike Sallis finished the Child-Adult Jumper division with a fourth and fifth on Smart Alec;

  • Its A Habit ridden by Pascal Lepine took ribbons in each class they entered; and

  • Taylor Vandenakker was Hopeful Jumper Reserve Champion on Jimini Criquet when she sealed her claim with an outstanding jump-off to win the last class of the day.

Another superb set of results for the Elmcroft team.

MORE GOOD SHOW RESULTS

In her first ever appearance at a show, Anna Lazurko was Reserve Champion in the Pre-Novice hunters with On The Fly, and went on to do well in equitation classes, on the July 7-8 weekend.

Kourtney Shayanpour won another C Equitation medal at the second Westar show confirming her as a very consistent young equitation rider. Elmcroft newcomer, Taylor Vandenakker rode Jimini Criquet to third and fourth place ribbons in the hotly contested Hopeful Jumpers division.

Meanwhile, the formidable combination of Mike Sallis and Smart Alec once more shone in the Child/Adult Jumpers. Mike piloted Smart Alec to a Reserve Championship at Ashland, again proving the consistency of this pairing. He was then GRAND CHAMPION over the two Westar shows, after they garnered more good ribbons on the 14-15 July weekend. Mike and Alec have been to three Trillium shows this season and so far haven't failed to win a ribbon in the nine classes entered.

CHAMPIONS, CHAMPIONS AND MORE CHAMPIONS,--PLUS MEDALS

[Clix for Pix]

Elmcroft riders picked up four Champion results at Westar Trillium Show on 23-24 June weekend, including taking both Jumper divisions and the Hack division. Mike Sallis on Smart Alec never touched a fence in three jumper rounds to claim the Child/Adult Jumper Championship—a belated father’s day gift to a grand horse and rider combination.  Samantha MacGillivray on Just Cruisin’ brought home Champion honours in the Trillium Jumper, with a win and two good places. Jason Neill on Cool Cat wrapped up the Hack Championship with a pair of red ribbons and a good place in the third class. And Cydney Laughton-Egan on Leporello continued her winning ways to claim Reserve Champion in the Novice division and equitation honours. Other high prizes went to Caillin LaPrairie [jumper], Laura Schneider [short stirrups] and Gabrielle Morrison [pony].

Trillium Jumper Champion, Samantha MacGillivray and Just Cruisin’

LEVEL 3 SAMANTHA

Congratulations to Samantha MacGillivray on successfully completing her Equine Canada Rider Level 3 exams and being awarded this certification.

Ride on Sam!!

Not to be outdone by their jumper confreres, Elmcroft’s classic equitation riders registered some terrific successes on the second day. Kate Peer won the Child/Adult Equitation Medal—combined over fences and flat---with Kourtney Shayanpour in second spot. Then Kate won A Equitation on the flat and Kourtney followed suit winning C Equitation on the flat. All these equitation classes were strongly contested. Both Kate and Kourtney also picked up some good hunter prizes along the way.

This was the most successful two day show ever for the Elmcroft team and a tribute to our riders, their horses, their supporters and coaches Amanda and Melanie—a winning combination.
